Over the Limit

Male, age 35, 5'10" (70 in), 16.5" neck, 42" waist.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Measuring the neck above the Adam's apple instead of just below it (inflates the neck value, artificially lowers the result).
  • Measuring waist at the belly button instead of at the narrowest natural waist (females) or across the navel (males).
  • Pulling the tape too tight and compressing tissue — Navy protocol requires snug but not compressing.
  • Measuring right after a meal — Navy BCA is performed first thing in the morning for consistency.
  • Rounding height up to the nearest inch instead of the nearest half-inch per OPNAVINST 6110.1K.

The Formula

Male: %BF = 86.010 × log10(abdomen − neck) − 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76. Female: %BF = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log10(height) − 78.387. All measurements in inches. This is the Hodgdon-Beckett Circumference Method mandated by DoDI 1308.3 and published in OPNAVINST 6110.1K Guide 4.

Methodology & Sources

This calculator implements the US Navy Circumference Method (Hodgdon-Beckett 1984) as specified in OPNAVINST 6110.1K and DoDI 1308.3, verified against primary source PDFs on 2026-04-11. The formula is identical to the civilian body fat calculator on this site; the pass/fail verdict applies the age-bracketed maximum percentages from OPNAVINST 6110.1K Guide 4 (which descends from NAVADMIN 178/15).
